Scholarships for Single Mothers

Submitted by admin on Fri, 06/25/2010 - 11:33

Mothers, especially single mothers are faced with the dual responsibility of taking care of the home and providing for their children. If you are interested in going back to school and the only factor preventing you from doing so are the costs associated with it, consider applying for scholarships. Fortunately, there are many government, non profit organizations and private companies that are offering scholarships to single mothers. Award amounts, deadlines, and eligibility requirements vary, so please be attentive when applying.

Where to Look for Scholarships

  • Affiliations- Approach your local community, church, current and previous employers to see if they are sponsoring any scholarships. Many companies offer tuition reimbursement for employees that are looking to further their education and gain additional skills.
  • Institutional Scholarships- Create a list of colleges that you would be interested in enrolling in and contact the schools to see if they offer scholarships for a particular major or career interest.
  • Consult friends/family- Ask around and see how other people are financing their education. They may provide excellent leads for scholarships and grants that you were unaware of.
  • Online- With the convenience of the internet, you can conduct your scholarship research by typing in keywords and filtering through the results that are applicable to you.

Student Aid on the Web is an excellent resource provided by the U.S. Department of Education administering over $100 billion in new aid. They are committed to making education more attainable and affordable for individuals. You can browse through their database by typing in keywords such as “single mother” and relevant scholarships will populate.

Soroptimist International offers awards for women who care the primary caretakers of their families and looking to improve their education, skills and employment opportunities. Award amount (up to $10000)

Educational Foundation for Women in Accounting provides scholarships for single parents whom are the main caretakers for their families either through divorce or death of a spouse. Award amount ($2000 - $16000)

    Be Careful of Scholarship Scams

If you are notified that you “won” a scholarship that you never applied to, it is most likely a scam. Scholarships that ask you to pay for fees so they can process your application are most likely not legitimate either. Remember, the reason why you’re applying for a scholarship is so you can receive money, not part with your money. Be careful and be diligent with your research. Apply to scholarships that are sponsored by reputable organizations and foundations.
